W. E. B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist who co-founded the NAACP. The first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard, he was the most important Black intellectual of the twentieth century. His works, including The Souls of Black Folk, transformed American understanding of race and inequality.
