Nikolai Chernyshevsky was a Russian revolutionary democrat, philosopher, and literary critic whose novel What Is to Be Done? became the most politically influential Russian novel of the nineteenth century. Imprisoned for his radical views, he wrote the novel in the Peter and Paul Fortress. His materialist aesthetics and political philosophy profoundly influenced the Russian revolutionary movement, including Lenin.
