Juan Goytisolo was a Spanish novelist, essayist, and poet, considered one of the most important Spanish writers of the postwar period. Self-exiled from Francoist Spain, he lived in Paris and Marrakech. His Mendiola trilogy — Marks of Identity, Count Julian, and Juan the Landless — is a radical deconstruction of Spanish identity and literary tradition. He received the Cervantes Prize in 2014.
